Why saying it out loud works
Re-reading your notes feels productive, but most of what it builds is familiarity — the sense that you've seen something before, which is easy to mistake for knowing it. Retrieving an answer from memory is what actually strengthens it, and formulating that answer out loud goes one step further than thinking it through silently: you find out immediately whether the answer was complete.
